Santa Monica Pier Embraces Día de los Muertos with Art, Dance, and Community Altar

Santa Monica, CA — November 1, 2024 The Santa Monica Pier rang in Día de los Muertos on Friday, marking the first of two days dedicated to honoring the traditional Mexican holiday. The celebration, which runs through Saturday, offers a family-friendly experience with a series of vibrant activities held inside the iconic Merry Go-Round building.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m., the event welcomed visitors with free face painting, communal altars, and a Pan de Muerto decorating class presented by Northgate Market, where children took home masks and goodie bags. The evening’s entertainment included spirited performances by Ballet Folklórico dancers, showcasing the heritage of the holiday. The crowd gathered to witness Jade Morales and Ballet Folklórico de Santa Monica perform traditional dances that honored the community’s Mexican roots. The building’s decor transformed the 100-year-old carousel into a colorful homage to Día de los Muertos, draped in marigold flowers and papel picado banners. Art installations by local artists Sylvia Sanchez and Yolanda Medina added depth to the tribute, with a large communal altar inviting attendees to contribute personal photographs of loved ones, fostering a sense of community remembrance. Supported by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and in collaboration with Northgate Market, Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA, and Mariasol, the Santa Monica Pier’s Día de los Muertos celebration provided a communal space for reflection and festivity. Soda Jerks, a local favorite, offered cups of hot chocolate, adding a warm touch to the chilly evening. Fallout Fans Suit Up for ‘All Out for Fallout Day’ at Santa Monica Pier

Fans gathered at Pacific Park on Thursday, August 15, 2024, for a special promotion celebrating “All Out for Fallout Day,” an event honoring the hit series "Fallout" and its 17 Emmy nominations. Actor Aaron Moten, who portrays Maximus in the Amazon series, made a surprise appearance, greeting fans and posing for photos in front of a giant prop of his character. Many attendees arrived dressed as characters from the show, adding to the event's immersive atmosphere.

As part of the promotion, Pacific Park at the Santa Monica Pier was transformed into a Fallout-themed experience. The iconic Ferris wheel and Churrita Churros stand were rebranded to reflect the franchise, with 33-cent churros available for fans who said the special phrase, “Okie Dokie?” at the cashier. Venice Beach Celebrates Olympic Spirit with Skateboarding and Live Sports at Viewing Party

 

Venice Beach, CA - August 9, 2024 - Crowds gathered at Windward Plaza today as the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, in partnership with PlayLA, hosted the first in a series of citywide watch parties celebrating the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. The event, held at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, streamed live coverage of men's soccer, women's volleyball, and break dancing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The series of viewing parties, announced by the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks, aims to bring the excitement of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games to communities across Los Angeles. Through the PlayLA Youth and Adaptive Youth Sports Programs, the initiative also seeks to inspire local youth by providing access to quality sports programs at neighborhood recreation centers. PlayLA, California’s largest youth sports development commitment, serves as a legacy initiative leading up to and following the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mayor Karen Bass expressed her hope that these events will build excitement as Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games for the third time in history. Mayor Bass, who will make history as the first Black woman to receive the official Olympic flag during the Paris Games Closing Ceremony, emphasized the importance of ensuring the Games benefit all Angelenos, particularly by supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and promoting lasting improvements throughout the city.

In anticipation of the 2028 Games, the PlayLA program is designed to engage youth of all abilities in a wide range of sports activities, including adaptive sports, with the goal of eliminating economic barriers and fostering inclusivity. Registration for youth aged 5-17 is just $10, thanks to an investment from the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee.

Happy Fourth of July: 17th Annual Parade Shines on Main Street, Uniting Santa Monica


In a grand display of community pride, the Ocean Park Association presented the 17th Annual Fourth of July Parade on Main Street, held on Thursday, July 4, 2024. Amidst cheers and applause, former Mayor Judy Abdo served as the Grand Marshall, adding honor and significance to the festivities.

The eagerly anticipated event attracted families, musicians, civic groups, and individuals celebrating the spirit of American pride. Among the highlights was the Santa Monica High School Marching Band, whose spirited rendition of patriotic tunes resonated through the streets. The Santa Monica College Cheerleaders also showcased vibrant routines, adding excitement to the event.

Santa Monica Police Mounted officers, riding gracefully atop their horses, symbolized their commitment to public safety. Their presence reminded attendees of the professionalism and dedication of Santa Monica's finest.

Notable personalities in attendance included Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock, California Senator Ben Allen, Tony Vazquez from the California Board of Equalization, Santa Monica Police Chief Ramon Batista, Santa Monica Fire Chief Matthew Hallock, and former Santa Monica Mayor Nathaniel Trives.

Classic cars, including a 100-year-old Model T, infused the celebration with nostalgia and charm. An eclectic mix of participants, including neighbors, children, cycling enthusiasts, imaginative teams, marching bands, and civic groups, united in a spirited march down Main Street, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and community spirit.

Santa Monica once again demonstrated its commitment to unity, creativity, and the celebration of American pride, making the 17th Annual Fourth of July Parade an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
