New Digital Kiosk Installed on Ocean Avenue as Santa Monica Expands Interactive Wayfinding Program

Technicians from JB3d installed a new digital kiosk on Ocean Avenue near the Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. This marks the 20th kiosk installed as part of Santa Monica’s new digital wayfinding and out-of-home advertising program. An additional five kiosks will be installed in this phase, bringing the total to 25. The City has partnered with BIG Outdoor to implement the program, which aims to provide interactive information for residents and visitors, improve public safety through emergency capabilities, share community messaging, and generate revenue through advertising sales. City officials confirm that the program will come at no cost to the city, with Santa Monica set to receive 50% of the adjusted gross revenue from the kiosks once they are activated. A minimum annual revenue of $5 million will be guaranteed when all 25 kiosks are fully operational, along with a one-time $4 million signing bonus.

In addition to the financial benefits, the kiosk program will provide several community advantages. It will help residents and visitors navigate local destinations, support small businesses, and offer free public Wi-Fi, which is particularly useful for international tourists who may not have data plans. The kiosks will display announcements for local events, public art exhibits, and community services. They will also offer real-time transit information and shared mobility options, helping people get around more easily. The kiosks are designed to be inclusive, with information available in multiple languages and features for those who are hearing or vision impaired. Public safety will be enhanced through the inclusion of emergency blue phones, emergency alerts, and optional surveillance in crisis situations. The kiosks will also provide access to Santa Monica’s 3-1-1 customer service portal. All maintenance, repairs, and replacements will be handled by BIG Outdoor, which has a dedicated team available seven days a week. The 20-year franchise agreement is expected to generate at least $5 million annually to support community services and priorities.

Joker's Wild: 'Diablo' Sparks Halloween Frolic at Venice Beach Drum Circle

Amid the vibrant hues of sunset at Venice Beach on October 27, 2024, Eder, an established artist and musician also known as "Diablo," fully embraced the Halloween spirit by attending the weekly Drum Circle dressed as the Joker. This cultural staple of the area pulsed with the rhythm of community and celebration, and Eder's thematic costume added a playful twist to the evening's festivities.

"Venice Beach has always been a cultural hub, something I've been a part of since my teenage years," Eder shared enthusiastically. "The Drum Circle isn't just about music; it's a sanctuary, a reliable gathering place that we know will always be here, no matter what."

Eder highlighted that the Drum Circle is more than a musical event; it's a cultural phenomenon that fosters a sense of community and belonging. "It's never been about escaping through substances; it's about having a place to go, knowing it will be there," he explained. "This circle is a crown, a gathering that welcomes everyone."

The artist also expressed concerns about the local government's understanding of the community. "You've got to see the real Venice Beach, beyond the computer screens. There's a bike run organized by someone known as 'The Captain,' and many other activities that create a sense of community here," Eder said, pointing out the disconnect between the local authorities and the beach community's realities.

As the drums continued to echo into the evening, Eder stood barefoot in the sand, his Joker costume a nod to the Halloween season, embodying both the joy and the depth of Venice Beach's unique culture. "This place is sacred to me. It's about breaking through to the other side of yourself, finding peace and connection in a community that accepts and celebrates every individual," he reflected.

With every beat of the drum, Eder and the Venice Beach community continue to champion a vibrant culture that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors, making the Drum Circle a must-experience event that embodies the spirit of unity and artistic expression.

Safety Slate Marches for Change: Candidates Rally for Safer Streets and Parks in Santa Monica

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, the "Women For A Safer Santa Monica" and the Safety Slate candidates marched down Main Street, advocating for public safety reforms and a stronger community focus. The group carried signs and chanted slogans calling for leadership that puts the residents and businesses of Santa Monica first. The march featured speeches from the slate’s candidates, including Mayor Phil Brock, councilmember Oscar de la Torre, business owner John Putnam, and dental implant surgeon Dr. Vivian Roknian. Each candidate voiced their concerns about the current state of public safety and their commitment to addressing these issues. John Putnam, a long-time business owner and candidate for City Council, stressed the need to protect the city’s women. "Thirty-eight percent of our population are single women in Santa Monica," he said. "We need to protect them. They deserve our leadership to help them." Putnam emphasized that the entire community should benefit from leadership that listens to and acts in the interest of all residents. Dr. Vivian Roknian echoed these sentiments, particularly addressing the need for safer public spaces. "We need to take our parks back for our kids, our seniors, our families," Roknian said. "Let’s make our parks and green spaces safer for everyone." She also highlighted the struggles many residents face in accessing public spaces, adding, "Many apartment owners and renters don’t feel safe going to our parks, or even getting into our libraries. We need to clean and open these spaces for everyone." Roknian also pinpointed the growing issues of drugs and homelessness in the city. "The biggest problem we have right now is the drugs coming into our city and the homeless crisis," she stated. "We need to give our police, fire department, and support services what they need to take care of all of us residents. We all deserve to smile again in our city." Oscar de la Torre, councilmember and Safety Slate candidate, highlighted the platform’s focus on public safety and community. "We’ve worked hard to address public safety by hiring more police officers and adding private security for areas like the 3rd Street Promenade," he said. "We’re committed to bringing back safety and community effort in a positive way." The event concluded with the slate’s call to action, rallying supporters with a clear message: a safer and cleaner Santa Monica is within reach, but it requires decisive leadership. As the marchers chanted, “What do we want? Safety! When do we want it? Now!”, the candidates reiterated their pledge to continue advocating for the well-being of all Santa Monica residents. The Safety Slate’s platform includes addressing homelessness, supporting law enforcement, revitalizing commercial districts, protecting rent control, and ensuring clean and safe public spaces. The slate, endorsed by local unions like Teamsters Local 42, aims to foster a stronger, safer Santa Monica for all.

Billy shared his recent ordeal, detailing a hostile encounter and discussing his efforts to find stability while avoiding police custody. Billy recounted a recent threatening incident, explaining, "They tried to run me off a road a couple of nights ago... and I was talking to a police officer over here, he said no, they were just trying to take me into custody." His tone reflected a mix of resignation and frustration with how authorities handled his case. The young runaway also expressed dissatisfaction with Safe Place for Youth (SPY), a local service program that has repeatedly turned him away due to age restrictions. "It's kind of annoying when they keep on telling me I can come over, and when I show up, they're saying they can't help me," Billy commented, revealing the cyclic disappointments he faces. Billy's narrative took a personal turn as he spoke about Daisy, the Venice Healer, who he feels has misrepresented him to others. "She's starting to act a fool, bro... she's saying things about me that aren't really true," Billy stated, indicating a growing rift between him and Daisy over her public comments concerning his actions. Despite the challenges, Billy remains focused on his future, outlining his plans to gain independence and criticizing those who question his maturity due to his age. "I'm getting my stuff done, and I'm starting to get pissed off by the way people are telling me, 'Oh, you're a kid this and this and that.' It doesn't matter. I'm getting my reality check and my stuff straight," he declared firmly. Billy's day ended on a note of resilience as he prepared for the upcoming community Halloween event at the skate park. His story underscores the complex layers of youth homelessness, police interaction, and community support in Venice Beach.

Artist Eder Champions Community Clean-Up and Accountability at Venice Beach

On a bright Saturday morning, Santa Monica Closeup had the pleasure of sitting down with the multifaceted artist and musician Eder at Venice Beach. The setting was none other than our picturesque beach, where Eder shared his thoughts on environmental responsibility and the artist's role in community engagement.

"Welcome to our joint effort," Eder began, pointing out the unattended palm tree branches scattered around the beach. "It seems some people have started picking up these branches after seeing my work here. I'm all about filling in gaps where they exist," he explained, emphasizing his proactive approach to keeping public spaces clean.

Eder, who describes himself as an artist capable of creating music and building structures, expresses a strong connection to his surroundings. "I've established my headquarters here, right on public property," he said with a smile, indicating his commitment to community betterment. He highlighted his efforts to maintain cleanliness, even when local authorities have not addressed fallen debris.

The discussion soon turned to the broader implications of his actions. "This is my art piece. I'm calling it 'Let's All Be Accountable.' It's about demonstrating that if I’m held accountable for enjoying a day at the beach, then why aren't the authorities held accountable for their actions?" Eder questioned, challenging the status quo.

He also shared a personal story of how he had been affected by local enforcement policies. "They took everything from me – started with a tent, which wasn't really a tent but a canopy. Then, all I had left was a blanket, some food, and my ideas," he recounted, his voice tinged with frustration yet also a sense of determination.

Despite these challenges, Eder remains undeterred. "I'm not just here to talk; I'm here to act. I clean up, I create, and I lead by example. That's the essence of my project here. If they take my setup, then they're just doing the job I started – keeping our beach beautiful," he concluded, inviting everyone to join him in this endeavor.

As the interview wrapped up, Eder stood barefoot in the sand, a testament to his resilience and commitment. "You can take my shoes, but you can't take my spirit. I'm here to show that through positive action, we can all contribute to a better, cleaner, and more accountable community," he said, his gaze sweeping across the beach he loves so dearly.

Stay tuned to Santa Monica Closeup for more real stories from our vibrant community.

At the time, Billy was still at Daisy's Healing Arts Temple at Venice Beach but fled upon their arrival.

Fourteen-Year-Old Runaway Reveals Life on the Streets Just Days Before LAPD Custody

IIn a poignant interview posted today on the popular YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly, 14-year-old runaway Billy shared his harrowing journey to the streets. The interview comes just days before his custody by LAPD on October 14, 2024, as documented on Santa Monica Closeup. Born in Inglewood, California, Billy’s life was fraught with instability and trauma from a young age, moving frequently due to family issues until settling in Lancaster. His early childhood was marked by abuse and addiction within his family, leading to him being placed under the care of his aunt.

Billy detailed his experiences of living under his aunt's guardianship for a decade, a period that provided stability despite ongoing personal struggles. From habitual running away beginning at age seven to engaging in petty theft and fighting to protect his siblings, his actions reflected a tumultuous upbringing. His narrative took a darker turn as he recounted a severe incident of violence involving his sister, which resulted in police intervention and his subsequent detention in juvenile hall.

Describing his life as a series of escape attempts from various caregivers and group homes, Billy’s story is a stark reminder of the failings of the child welfare system to provide stable, supportive environments for vulnerable youth. His journey through homelessness introduced him to a community of skaters and eventually led him to Venice Beach, where he met Daisy, a local healer who took him under her wing. Daisy plans to support Billy through an emancipation process, aiming to provide him a semblance of stability and control over his life.

Throughout the interview, Billy expressed a mixture of resilience and resignation to the hardships he’s faced, revealing a deep-seated desire for normalcy and a chance at a better future. His story underscores the critical challenges faced by runaways and the importance of supportive community networks that can offer more than just temporary shelter, but a chance to heal and rebuild.

Tensions Flare as Homeless Items Are Thrown Away During Weekly Venice Beach Cleanup

Venice, Los Angeles – Friday, October 18, 2024 — As part of the ongoing weekly cleanup initiatives in Venice, a coordinated operation was conducted at Venice Beach by the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, LA County Beaches and Harbors, and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. The effort focused on removing a homeless encampment to maintain public safety and cleanliness in the area. Los Angeles Police officers and Park Rangers were on-site to oversee the process, ensuring compliance with Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits tents in city parks to keep public spaces safe and accessible. Sanitation workers gave individuals camping along the beach 15 minutes to pack their belongings before the cleanup began. Items left behind were either disposed of or placed in storage for later retrieval. After clearing the encampment, the cleanup team moved on to other encampments, continuing their efforts along the beach. The multi-agency task force included the LAPD, Department of Public Works, Recreation and Parks, LA County Beaches and Harbors, Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), and a representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office. Workers in protective gear carefully sorted and removed hazardous and non-hazardous waste, highlighting the city’s ongoing commitment to improving public health and sanitation. LAPD officers ensured the cleanup complied with local regulations, but no citations were issued during the operation, reflecting the city's compassionate approach to addressing homelessness. This initiative is part of a broader city effort to balance public space maintenance with a compassionate response to homelessness. The absence of citations during the cleanup underscores the city's preference for supportive measures over punitive actions. These weekly cleanups are a critical component of Los Angeles’s strategy to address homelessness while maintaining safety and cleanliness in public areas. No citations were issued during this operation, highlighting the city’s commitment to supportive solutions over enforcement.
