On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, Santa Monica Closeup's photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz spoke with Jennifer Train, a long-time local of Venice Beach who shared her remarkable life story from within her encampment.
Jennifer, originally from Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, recounted her childhood with warmth. “I had a great childhood,” she said, adding that she pursued higher education at the University of Arizona. “I’m a Wildcat, class of ’93,” she noted with pride. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Arts, emphasizing scenic design, a field in which she found her creative passion.
Jennifer’s artistic pursuits led her to work as an art director in Los Angeles. “I did an Aimee Mann video,” she recalled, referring to the music video for *Voices Carry*. Reflecting on her time in the industry, she said, “It was a very toxic environment. We weren’t doing brain surgery, but the pressure was immense.” One of her last major projects was for the cult film *Leprechaun 6: In the Hood*, which she worked on as a set dresser in downtown Los Angeles.
Beyond her work in film, Jennifer has lived an extraordinary life filled with creative endeavors. “I’m an artist, a poet, a musician, and a singer,” she shared. In her younger years, Jennifer was also a skilled skateboarder who once went pro, touring with the Phoenix Vans team at just 15. “Tony Hawk and I have a history,” she revealed, reminiscing about her time with the legendary Dogtown skaters.
Despite her many accomplishments, Jennifer’s life has been marked by significant challenges. Now, she is candid about her current circumstances, living at Venice Beach and coping with health issues. “I’m HIV positive,” she said, while emphasizing the care she receives from local clinics. “If I take my medication every day, it keeps the virus non-detectable.”
Jennifer shared a glimmer of hope for the future. “I got a house offered to me last night,” she said, with excitement in her voice. The opportunity to live in a house in Venice Beach with a local family marks a pivotal moment in her journey. “I’ll be packing up and moving in today,” she said, determined to make the most of the opportunity.
Her story is a testament to resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. As she prepares to transition from the Boardwalk to a more stable environment, Jennifer remains optimistic. “I’m getting off the Boardwalk today. I’m ready for what’s next.”

Santa Monica Pier Painter Joey Alvarez Refreshes Beloved Compass Rose Mural at Pier’s Edge
On a sunny Monday morning, November 4, 2024, Santa Monica Closeup photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz met up with Joey Alvarez, the "Santa Monica Pier Painter," as he worked on refurbishing the compass rose mural at the west end of the Santa Monica Pier. Originally painted in 2018 by Santa Monica High School student Mimi Gaudet, the mural has been freshened up several times due to heavy foot traffic and the elements.
"This thing wears down pretty fast," Alvarez explained, attributing the fading to constant moisture from the ocean and the pier’s popularity as a photo spot. "I’ve sanded it down and wiped it clean; now, I'm working on the white outlining.” He’ll be joined later by Beach Maintenance’s Richard, who specializes in lettering, to complete the mural’s intricate interior.
A Santa Monica native and 12-year veteran of pier maintenance, Alvarez was recently recognized as "Employee of the Year." Beyond his role as the pier’s painter, Alvarez has spent nearly 30 years as a Little League coach, guiding young players through the fundamentals and spirit of the game. "I've watched a lot of these kids grow up through baseball," he shared. "It's incredible to see them go from kids on the field to adults giving back to the community."
From touching up the compass rose to coaching on the diamond, Alvarez’s dedication to Santa Monica remains a constant, weaving a deep community connection into every brushstroke and game.

Street Vendor Offers Swords and Stun Guns Amid Santa Monica’s Growing Focus on Security
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and 6th Street, Deon "Famous Dion" Davis was spotted selling a range of security products, including stun guns, pepper spray, and swords, as part of his safety campaign. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, Famous Dion offers these items with the aim of promoting personal safety while also educating others on building small businesses.
Santa Monica Closeup approached Davis for an interview, during which he highlighted his mission. "What I have here is a couple of my flagship products—a flashlight taser and pepper spray. Today, I’m offering them together for $19.99," Davis said while demonstrating the taser's features. He emphasized that the products are part of a larger initiative to help people protect themselves. "We’re doing a live safety campaign for people’s safety," he added.
However, it is important to note that selling and carrying certain items, such as swords and knives, may be illegal in Santa Monica. According to Santa Monica Municipal Code 3.29.020, the open carry of weapons, including knives, daggers, and swords, is prohibited in public spaces. Violations of this ordinance could result in legal consequences for both sellers and buyers. Despite this, Davis continued to promote the items, offering a starter sword for $30.
In addition to security items, Davis discussed his business philosophy, sharing insights on how he teaches entrepreneurship through what he calls "Hustle M University." "For 24 years now, I’ve been training people on how to go from zero to $100 a day," he explained. "It’s not just about selling stuff—it’s about having a great attitude, being on time, and being prepared."
Davis also noted his journey from Atlanta to Los Angeles, describing his dedication to serving the community and teaching others how to achieve financial independence. "I’ve been out here in L.A. for a year now, working every day with God's love, helping people learn how to provide for themselves."
As Davis continues his mission, he remains a fixture in the streets of Santa Monica, promoting safety and entrepreneurship to all who pass by, despite the potential legal concerns surrounding some of the products he sells.
