Black Friday Boycott: Pro-Palestine Protesters Rally in Downtown Santa Monica

On Friday, November 29, 2024, protests broke out in Downtown Santa Monica during Black Friday, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Demonstrators gathered to call for an end to U.S. aid to Israel and urged a boycott of holiday shopping to draw attention to their cause. Protesters blocked traffic along Broadway Avenue near Santa Monica Place Mall, chanting slogans in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Chants such as "Free, free, Palestine" and "The people united will never be defeated" resonated through the streets as the group marched from Tongva Park to the downtown shopping district. The protests temporarily shut down traffic on Broadway between 2nd and 4th Streets as activists rallied in front of the bustling mall, calling for consumers to join the boycott and stand in solidarity with Palestine. Organizers emphasized the connection between consumer activism and global advocacy, urging participants to resist economic systems they believe perpetuate conflict. Similar demonstrations were reported in cities worldwide as part of a broader movement aligning with the start of the holiday shopping season to amplify calls for justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Thanksgiving Block Party Brings Hope to Venice's Homeless Community

On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2024, the Lost Angels Organization hosted its 12th annual block party on Rose Avenue in Venice, providing vital support and holiday cheer to the homeless community. The event, held between Hampton Drive and Main Street, transformed the area into a haven of generosity and community connection.

Founder Tina Marie Wright expressed her passion for giving back during the event. "Hi guys, my name is Tina Wright. I'm the founder of Los Angeles Nonprofit Organization. This is our 12th year doing our event in Venice Beach. We give back to a less fortunate community, the homeless. We mainly give out hot, warm plates of Thanksgiving and Christmas food, brand-new shoes, and toiletries."

Tina's sister Linda, who plays a key role in organizing the event, elaborated on the program's thoughtful structure. "We have a hot food station where participants get to pick their warm dishes, brand-new fitted shoes, and we also pair them up with a volunteer in a buddy system. The volunteers guide them throughout the event, ensuring they feel cared for, loved, and reminded that the community is here for them."

Attendees enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving feast with all the fixings, while also receiving clothing, shoes, and essential toiletries. Volunteers embodied the organization's motto, "No one ever gets left behind," as they worked tirelessly to create an atmosphere of kindness and hope.

Lost Angels, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, relies entirely on donations and volunteer support to make such events possible. "If you want to join us for Christmas," Tina added, "please follow us on Instagram at @LosAngelsOrg and check out our website at LostAngelsLA.org."

With its mission of uplifting the less fortunate and creating meaningful community connections, Lost Angels continues to demonstrate how small acts of kindness can make a monumental difference. This Thanksgiving, they once again proved that compassion and collaboration can transform lives.

Santa Monica Police Step Up Enforcement on Overnight Bus and RV Violations at Beach Parking Lots

Santa Monica Police traffic officers were seen inventorying RVs and buses parked overnight at Lot 4 and 5 near Santa Monica Beach on Tuesday, November 11, 2024, in preparation for issuing citations. Parking regulations at the lot prohibit vehicles from staying between sundown and sunrise, yet enforcement has become a growing challenge as the lot has turned into a hub for RV and bus owners, including participants in an ongoing protest. The protest, organized by Emory Rodgers, founder of the Homeless Advocacy for a Constitutional Convention (HACC), began on October 29, 2024. Rodgers, who previously ran for U.S. Senate in California, has received multiple citations for his bus, which he parks overnight in the lot despite city regulations. Rodgers frames the protest as a constitutional exercise of First Amendment rights and a stand against systemic inequities that he says marginalize unhoused individuals and perpetuate societal injustice. In addition to protest-related activity, other RV and bus owners using the lot have explained their reasons for parking overnight. Santa Monica Closeup photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz spoke with a couple residing in a bus who shared their perspective. They said they prefer to pay the $63 parking fine rather than move to an RV campsite, citing the lot’s affordability and safety compared to other options. Many of the RV and bus owners are remote workers traveling across the country and using the lot as a temporary base. While most drivers reportedly pay their fines promptly, city officials have indicated they may escalate enforcement efforts, including towing vehicles for repeat violations or unpaid citations. Residents have expressed frustration over the use of the lot for overnight parking, particularly as it has become a focal point for the HACC protest. Some community members have taken to social media to urge stricter enforcement, while others criticize the lack of immediate action. Rodgers, who has parked his bus overnight as part of the protest, remains undeterred. "We are not enemies of the police or anyone else—we’re simply trying to create a more just and cooperative society," he said, emphasizing that the protest highlights deeper systemic issues beyond the parking violations themselves. The Santa Monica Police Department has yet to release a statement regarding its enforcement plans for public parking at the beach lots As tensions persist, the city faces increasing pressure to address the situation while balancing the concerns of residents, activists, and transient RV and bus owners.

Santa Monica Police Crack Down on Protest Bus as Activist Pushes for Social Reform

Santa Monica Police officers issued parking tickets to a bus parked at Lot 5 near Santa Monica Beach on Monday, November 25, 2024. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing protest organized by Emory Rodgers, founder of the Homeless Advocacy for a Constitutional Convention (HACC). The protest, which began on October 29, 2024, highlights what organizers call the "unalienable rights" of unhoused individuals to occupy public property for shelter.

Rodgers, who has received multiple parking tickets daily since the protest started, has been keeping his bus parked overnight in Lot 5, in violation of city regulations. The parking lot closes at sunset, and vehicles are not permitted to remain overnight. Despite these restrictions, Rodgers and HACC maintain their presence, asserting their constitutional right to assemble and redress grievances.

Rodgers, who previously ran for U.S. Senate in California inspired by Bernie Sanders’ progressive platform, emphasized the systemic issues at the heart of the protest. His Senate campaign focused on advocating for education reform, public healthcare, and removing corporate influence from politics. Speaking with Santa Monica Closeup photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz, Rodgers described the protest as a stand against broader societal inequities and a challenge to a system that he claims perpetuates economic disparity and social oppression.

"The system itself is corrupted; it’s not about individual blame," Rodgers said. "This is not just about homelessness; it’s about challenging a system that marginalizes people across all walks of life."

Residents have expressed frustration over the situation, with many describing the lot as a growing encampment. Some community members have taken to social media, urging others to report the overnight parking and camping activity to the Santa Monica Police Department. Critics have also speculated that enforcement of anti-camping bans in neighboring cities like Malibu and Pacific Palisades may be pushing unhoused populations toward Santa Monica.

Monday's enforcement marked one of the most visible actions by authorities since the protest began. Police have suggested that further measures, including towing vehicles, could follow. However, Rodgers, who has secured legal representation, remains undeterred. "We are not enemies of the police or anyone else—we’re simply trying to create a more just and cooperative society," he said.

The Santa Monica Police Department has not released an official statement regarding the protest or its enforcement strategy. Both community members and activists are closely monitoring developments as the situation continues to unfold.

Community Tip Leads to Arrest in Brutal Santa Monica Assault Case

Santa Monica, CA – A collaborative effort between the community and law enforcement resulted in the arrest of a suspect in a brutal assault that occurred in September, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

On September 22, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of an assault in the 1400 block of Alley 5. They discovered a 25-year-old woman, new to the area and experiencing homelessness, who had suffered severe facial injuries and signs of strangulation. Benn was apprehended by detectives on November 14 near the VA facility in West Los Angeles and was charged with attempted murder under California Penal Code 664/187(a).

Deadly Confrontation: Santa Monica Police Release Video of Officer Stabbing and Fatal Shooting

Santa Monica Police Release Video Detailing Violent Attack on Officer

The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has released a Critical Incident Video documenting the October 5, 2024, attack on an officer and subsequent officer-involved shooting. The video provides a comprehensive overview of the events that unfolded in front of the department's headquarters, showcasing the dangerous split-second decisions officers face.

Key Events Leading to the Attack

The incident began at approximately 5:07 PM when the suspect, later identified as Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh, entered a Target store on Broadway and stole a set of kitchen knives after assaulting an employee. Surveillance footage shows the suspect fleeing the scene with one knife concealed under his jacket.

Minutes later, Halaibeh arrived at the Santa Monica Police Station, where he summoned an officer by ringing the call button. Body-worn camera footage captured the officer’s attempt to de-escalate the situation before being violently attacked with the stolen 8-inch knife. Despite the officer’s efforts to evade, he was stabbed multiple times in the neck and shoulder before using his firearm to neutralize the threat.

Aftermath and Investigation

Responding officers and Santa Monica Harbor Guards provided immediate medical aid, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The wounded officer was rushed to a trauma center for treatment of severe injuries, and forensic evidence later revealed the extent of the attack, including damage to the officer’s protective vest from additional knife strikes.

Investigations are ongoing, with two parallel reviews underway:

  1. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review to assess the legality of the officer’s use of deadly force.
  2. The SMPD’s Internal Affairs Division is performing a thorough administrative review to ensure departmental policies and procedures were followed.

Authorities are also examining the suspect’s background, including his mental health history and potential motives for targeting law enforcement.

Transparency and Community Engagement

The SMPD emphasized the need for transparency, releasing graphic footage and forensic evidence to provide context for the incident. Viewer discretion is strongly advised due to the violent nature of the content.

For more information, contact the SMPD or visit their official website. Updates will be shared as investigations continue. Anyone with additional details about the suspect or the events leading up to the attack is encouraged to reach out to SMPD detectives.

Police Uncover Booby-Trapped Garage After Shots Fired in Santa Monica

Santa Monica Police officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence on the 3300 block of Exposition Boulevard on Sunday, November 17, 2024, around 5:50 PM. A neighbor reported hearing gunfire along with a male voice threatening violence from the garage.

Upon arrival, officers found two elderly women inside the residence unharmed. Arthur Hideki Tabuchi, 61, was also found safe inside the property. During their search, officers discovered a shotgun shell mounted on a workbench in the garage, rigged with a spring-loaded firing pin attached to the garage door. The setup was designed to discharge the shell when the door was opened.

A second, similarly rigged shell was found near a pedestrian gate on the north side of the house. This device had been modified to act as a sound diversion and had been recently discharged, likely prompting the initial report of shots fired.

The LA County Bomb Squad was called to clear the property, ensuring no additional traps were present. The garage shell was safely dismantled, and a search warrant revealed more unlawfully obtained ammunition.

Tabuchi was transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. The District Attorney's office will file felony charges related to maintaining a booby trap under California Penal Code 20110.

Detectives encourage anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Detective McCoy at james.mccoy@santamonica.gov, Sergeant Cooney at shaun.cooney@santamonica.gov, or the Watch Commander at 310-458-8427, available 24/7.

Reviving the Compass Rose: Santa Monica’s Iconic Mural Restored by Pier Painter Joey Alvarez

On Monday, November 18, 2024, Joey Alvarez, known as the "Santa Monica Pier Painter," completed the repainting of the compass rose mural at the west end of the Santa Monica Pier. This marks the third time the mural has been refurbished since its original creation in 2018 by Santa Monica High School student Mimi Gaudet.

Alvarez, reflecting on the project, shared the challenges faced during the process: “It took two weeks, but weather was a big factor. Some mornings, it was too wet to paint, and I even had to go to jury duty one day,” he explained. Despite delays and the coastal elements, Alvarez pushed through. “The Santa Ana winds helped us out, drying the paint faster,” he added.

The mural, featuring the updated “Another Day in Paradise” in regular lettering, has undergone several revisions to maintain its vibrant look amid foot traffic and environmental wear. “Everyone comes and stands on it for photos, and when they take out the trash, the wheels wear it down,” Alvarez noted. He emphasized that constant moisture and foot traffic contribute to the need for regular upkeep.

With the project complete, Alvarez is set to move on to painting bathroom doors and maintaining other parts of the pier. “There’s always something to do out here,” he said, embodying the dedication he’s shown throughout his career as the pier’s only painter.

Participants, many honking their car horns in solidarity, created a spectacle of red, white, and blue that made its way from Los Angeles to the iconic Santa Monica Pier. Additionally, Trump achieved a win in the popular vote.

Spreading Hope: Mark Shares Words of Encouragement at Venice Beach Homeless Food Distribution

On November 9, 2024, the Oasis Network continued its vital work on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, distributing groceries to the unhoused community. Now under the leadership of Mark, who has stepped in to oversee operations while founder Dan Hubbard is ill, the nonprofit has maintained its mission of providing nourishment and support.

Mark, who is also homeless, starts his day at 5:30 AM, driving to four markets in the South Bay—three Whole Foods locations and one Vons—to collect donations. “We transfer the food from their red plastic totes into boxes and categorize it to make setup easier,” Mark explained, emphasizing the importance of organization in ensuring a smooth distribution process. He noted that he and fellow volunteer Ruben handle these tasks on both Saturdays and Sundays, describing them as “my two favorite days of the week.”

Beyond coordinating food pickup and distribution, Mark brings a sense of community and spiritual guidance to those waiting in line. Before handing out food, he often leads a prayer, encouraging everyone to open themselves up to gratitude and hope. “I smell some joy in the air today,” Mark said. “Let’s feel the joy of giving and receiving.”

The food distributions are orderly, thanks in part to Mark’s leadership and the cooperation of volunteers. “We try to make sure that people aren’t really jumping in with their hands, and we hand everything out to individuals,” he stated, underscoring the effort to maintain fairness.

Despite challenges, Mark remains committed to growing the organization’s outreach. He mentioned that more donations and support would be welcome to enhance their services. “We’re hoping the line gets bigger and the food gets greater,” Mark said. He also expressed a need for more resources, including a vehicle to help with transportation. “Right now, there’s no 501(c)(3); everything’s out of pocket. But with help, we can really grow.”

Mark’s dedication and positive spirit have made him a pillar within the Oasis Network and the Venice Beach community. “I used to stand in this line. Now I’m fortunate to be on the other side,” he reflected. “Trust me, when you change the frequency, everything changes.”

Serving Hope: Unhoused Volunteer Tom Distributes Food to Homeless on Venice Beach Boardwalk

On November 9, 2024, volunteers from Oasis Network continued their vital work of distributing groceries on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, extending their support to the unhoused community. Oasis, founded by Dan Hubbard, is renowned for providing food, emotional, and spiritual assistance. Although Hubbard, the former CEO, is currently unable to oversee operations due to illness, volunteers have maintained the organization's commitment to uplifting those in need. Among them is Tom, who is unhoused himself but exemplifies resilience and leadership.

The Oasis team starts their mornings early, collecting food from four different markets in the South Bay, including three Whole Foods locations and one Vons. Tom plays a critical role in preparing for the food distribution, sweeping the area before the food truck arrives and assisting with unloading and organizing. “I try to clean all the debris from the night before so that everything is ready when people show up,” he shared while sweeping the grounds and speaking with Santa Monica Closeup photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz. The truck typically arrives between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, bringing the generous food donations that sustain the effort.

Tom also manages the line of people waiting for food, ensuring fairness amidst the crowd. However, the task comes with challenges. “We’re supposed to have some added security because there have been a couple of fights up here,” Tom mentioned. He recounted incidents involving altercations and noted the presence of law enforcement teams like the Circle and SAFE teams to maintain order.

Despite difficulties, Tom takes pride in the community effort. “This is for the needy, not the greedy,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect among those waiting for food. “Some people line up at 4:00 in the morning to secure their place, and it’s not fair when others show up later and try to cut ahead.”

Tom’s dedication goes beyond managing food lines; he also cleans and maintains public spaces, including the boardwalk bathrooms. “I buy my own bleach and alcohol to sanitize the area. At the end of the day, this is our home,” he said.

A military veteran, Tom’s journey to this point has been marked by personal battles, including overcoming addiction and health challenges related to chronic kidney disease (CKD). He shared, “I was diagnosed with stage 4 CKD. Insurance only covered so much, so I chose to fight it on my own terms, even if it meant living out here.” Despite adversity, Tom continues to lead by example, inspiring others in the community to maintain cleanliness and order.

Tom also highlighted the underlying struggles that contribute to addiction among the unhoused. “It’s easy to say, ‘I’m an addict,’ but harder to admit, ‘I gave up on myself.’ Many out here have given up on life and use drugs as a way to cope,” he reflected. Yet, he remains steadfast in his recovery, acknowledging the support from friends, fellow veterans, and even some police officers who encourage him.

His commitment to positive change has earned him respect, even among those who may not always agree with him. “Some people hate me for standing out, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to take the good with the bad,” Tom said before resuming his volunteer duties.

Historic Santa Monica Bowling Alley Demolished to Make Way for Mixed-Use Development

Santa Monica, November 8, 2024 – The iconic bowling alley at 234 Pico Boulevard has been demolished, making way for a new mixed-use development. According to an article by Steven Sharp in *Urbanize Los Angeles*, Cypress Equity Investments, which acquired the property in 2020, is leading the project that will introduce four- and five-story buildings. The planned development includes 186 residential units, ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartments, alongside approximately 11,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The project will also feature a three-level, partially underground parking structure with 346 parking spaces.

The revised project leverages updates to the state density bonus law, which allows for 19 deed-restricted affordable units and grants waivers for height and zoning limitations. KFA Architecture is overseeing the design, which has evolved since its last presentation to the Architectural Review Board in August 2022. The updated plans notably include the retention and reinstallation of the original “BOWL” sign to maintain a connection to the site's history.

Tensions Rise as Police and Park Rangers Face Off with Individual During Venice Beach Cleanup

Venice, Los Angeles – Friday, November 8, 2024 — During the weekly Friday cleanup in Venice, Los Angeles Police officers, Park Rangers, and sanitation workers encountered a homeless individual camping under a lifeguard tower at Venice Beach. The Park Rangers informed the man that he had 15 minutes to move his belongings or they would be removed. When the individual did not fully comply, sanitation workers discarded his remaining items, including two bicycles and a mattress. The operation is part of an ongoing effort to maintain public safety and cleanliness at Venice Beach, extending to the surrounding areas. The coordinated cleanup was led by Los Angeles Park Rangers in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, LA County Beaches and Harbors, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. The initiative focused on clearing encampments and ensuring sanitary conditions along the beach. Park Rangers and Los Angeles Police officers were on-site to oversee the process and ensure adherence to Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits tents and camping structures in city parks. No citations were issued, highlighting the city’s compassionate approach to managing public spaces and addressing homelessness. A representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office, known for supporting these cleanup efforts, was present during the operation. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), which typically provides vital resources such as food, water, and hygiene kits during these operations, was notably absent. This weekly cleanup initiative is a critical part of the city’s comprehensive strategy to address homelessness, focusing on supportive rather than punitive measures. By prioritizing public health and safety through regular cleanups, Los Angeles aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for all while approaching homelessness with a balanced and humane perspective.

Police Oversee Removal of Homeless Belongings, Shopping Cart Destroyed During Cleanup Operation in Venice

Venice, Los Angeles – November 7, 2024 — A coordinated cleanup operation was conducted on Mildred Avenue in Venice, spearheaded by the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works in collaboration with Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. During the operation, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers encountered a homeless man camping on the sidewalk with two shopping carts full of belongings and a bicycle. The officers informed the man that he could only retain one shopping cart and up to 60 gallons of personal property. The second shopping cart was surrendered and discarded by sanitation workers, who threw it into the garbage truck. The sanitation crew provided the man with a 60-gallon bag to help store his items. This action was in line with Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 56.11, which regulates the storage of personal property in public spaces. The ordinance allows individuals experiencing homelessness to keep belongings in public areas if they fit within a 60-gallon container and do not create obstructions or hazards. Items exceeding this limit, classified as "bulky items"—including furniture and appliances—are not permitted on public property, with exceptions for essential mobility aids like bicycles, walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs. Section 56.11, amended in 2016, was enacted to strike a balance between the public's right to access clean, safe spaces and the needs of those without stable housing to retain essential personal property. While the city may impound unattended or excess property, a 24-hour notice is usually provided. The ordinance limits the seizure of bulky items to cases where they pose a safety or health risk or block public access, following a federal court decision that ruled against blanket size-based seizures as unconstitutional. The operation aimed to clear public areas efficiently, prioritizing public health and sanitation. LAPD officers were present to oversee a smooth and incident-free process. Workers in protective gear carefully sorted hazardous and non-hazardous waste, underscoring the city's commitment to maintaining safe and clean spaces in high-traffic areas. The cleanup adhered to Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits camping and unauthorized use of public spaces. This initiative is part of an ongoing weekly effort to address homelessness while promoting public safety and cleanliness. The multi-agency task force, which includes the LAPD and the Department of Public Works, remains dedicated to ensuring accessible and safe public spaces for all residents.
