Venice Beach Celebrates Olympic Spirit with Skateboarding and Live Sports at Viewing Party

 

Venice Beach, CA - August 9, 2024 - Crowds gathered at Windward Plaza today as the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, in partnership with PlayLA, hosted the first in a series of citywide watch parties celebrating the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. The event, held at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, streamed live coverage of men's soccer, women's volleyball, and break dancing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The series of viewing parties, announced by the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks, aims to bring the excitement of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games to communities across Los Angeles. Through the PlayLA Youth and Adaptive Youth Sports Programs, the initiative also seeks to inspire local youth by providing access to quality sports programs at neighborhood recreation centers. PlayLA, California’s largest youth sports development commitment, serves as a legacy initiative leading up to and following the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mayor Karen Bass expressed her hope that these events will build excitement as Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games for the third time in history. Mayor Bass, who will make history as the first Black woman to receive the official Olympic flag during the Paris Games Closing Ceremony, emphasized the importance of ensuring the Games benefit all Angelenos, particularly by supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and promoting lasting improvements throughout the city.

In anticipation of the 2028 Games, the PlayLA program is designed to engage youth of all abilities in a wide range of sports activities, including adaptive sports, with the goal of eliminating economic barriers and fostering inclusivity. Registration for youth aged 5-17 is just $10, thanks to an investment from the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee.

As the world turns its eyes to Paris, the spirit of the Olympics has already begun to touch the hearts of young Angelenos, starting today at Venice Beach.

Santa Monica Cracks Down on E-Scooters: Hundreds Impounded from Beach Bike Path

Santa Monica Police Department officers, in coordination with City Manager Rick Cole, impounded hundreds of Bird and Lime electric scooters from the Santa Monica Beach Bike Path on Friday, July 20, 2018. The move comes as part of an ongoing effort to enforce local and state regulations prohibiting motorized vehicles on the beach bike path.

The impounded e-scooters were reportedly abandoned by riders seeking to avoid fines. The Santa Monica Police Department emphasized the importance of adhering to key state safety laws, outlined in California Vehicle Code Sections 21223 and 21235:

- Only riders with a valid driver's license or instruction permit may operate a motorized scooter.

- Helmets are mandatory for riders of all ages.

- Scooters must be operated by a single rider, without passengers.

- Riding on sidewalks or the beach bike path is strictly prohibited.

- Scooters must not be parked on sidewalks in a manner that obstructs pedestrian traffic.

- Riding at night is only permitted if the scooter is equipped with adequate lighting, including a front light visible from the front and sides, and reflectors.

Authorities urge riders to follow these regulations to ensure safety and compliance.

Happy Fourth of July: 17th Annual Parade Shines on Main Street, Uniting Santa Monica

In a grand display of community pride, the Ocean Park Association presented the 17th Annual Fourth of July Parade on Main Street, held on Thursday, July 4, 2024. Amidst cheers and applause, former Mayor Judy Abdo served as the Grand Marshall, adding honor and significance to the festivities.

The eagerly anticipated event attracted families, musicians, civic groups, and individuals celebrating the spirit of American pride. Among the highlights was the Santa Monica High School Marching Band, whose spirited rendition of patriotic tunes resonated through the streets. The Santa Monica College Cheerleaders also showcased vibrant routines, adding excitement to the event.

Santa Monica Police Mounted officers, riding gracefully atop their horses, symbolized their commitment to public safety. Their presence reminded attendees of the professionalism and dedication of Santa Monica's finest.

Dispute Escalates: Man Thrown from Moving Truck During Escape Attempt

An altercation occurred between two men, who appear to be homeless, on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. The conflict arose when one man accused the other of stealing his phone. In an attempt to escape, the alleged thief jumped into the back of a passing pickup truck, followed closely by the accuser.

The driver of the pickup truck, unaware of the situation, yelled at the men to get out. As he sped away, one of the men was thrown from the vehicle. Meanwhile, the man accused of theft remained in the truck and drove away with the other man's phone. Local authorities are investigating the incident.

Firefighters Rescue Two People Trapped in Venice Public Restroom Stall.

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Los Angeles Firefighters and Los Angeles Police Officers were dispatched to a distressing scene where two individuals were trapped inside a public restroom stall due to a malfunctioning door lock. The incident, which unfolded in the heart of Venice Beach, drew a prompt response from emergency services after reports that the door would not unlock.

The two individuals, who appeared to be homeless, were confined in the stall for over two hours. In a concerted effort to rescue them, firefighters employed axes and hammers to break through the door, successfully liberating the trapped persons.
