Heatwave Challenges Venice Beach Homeless Encampment Cleanup Efforts
Venice, Los Angeles – September 6, 2024: Amid a sweltering heatwave, a multi-agency task force conducted a large-scale cleanup at Venice Beach on Friday. The effort, led by Los Angeles Park Rangers and supported by the LAPD, Department of Public Works, Recreation and Parks, Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., LAHSA, and Councilwoman Traci Park’s office, focused on clearing both hazardous and non-hazardous waste from the area.
This coordinated operation underscores the city's ongoing commitment to addressing homelessness with a compassionate approach. LAHSA was on-site providing essential services, including food, water, and hygiene kits, and no citations for public camping were issued, reflecting a supportive rather than punitive strategy.
The cleanup is part of regular efforts held every Friday along the Venice Beach Boardwalk, aiming to maintain public safety while addressing the complex challenges of homelessness.
Simultaneously, an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 PM PDT Monday for Los Angeles County Beaches, including Venice. Temperatures are forecasted to reach the upper 80s to 100 degrees, with little relief expected overnight. The extreme heat poses a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, those without air conditioning, and individuals who are active outdoors.
Residents and visitors are advised to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated, remaining in air-conditioned environments, avoiding direct sun exposure, and checking on relatives and neighbors. It is also critical to avoid leaving children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.

Homeless Man Charged with Multiple Assaults Following Violent Incidents in Santa Monica
Santa Monica, CA — A 31-year-old homeless man, Mario Alejandri, has been charged with multiple counts of assault following two separate incidents in Santa Monica. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed three felony charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon against Alejandri on September 3, 2024.
The first incident occurred on August 27, 2024, at Trader Joe’s on Broadway. Alejandri, who was recognized by store staff due to prior shoplifting incidents, became violent after being asked to leave the store. He allegedly struck an employee in the face, threw two potted plants, and attempted to hurl a sign before the store’s doors closed, preventing further escalation. The entire event was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras, and the employee did not sustain serious injuries.
The following day, at around 11:45 PM, a woman was assaulted on the 2700 block of Barnard Way. A good Samaritan riding by was flagged down by the woman, who was bleeding from cuts on her face and head. She reported that a man in an orange shirt had punched her repeatedly, struck her with a bottle, and attempted to shove sand into her mouth. Officers arrived promptly and began searching the area for the suspect.
Alejandri was located nearby and positively identified as the assailant. He was arrested at the scene and connected to both incidents through the investigation led by detectives, who recognized him from the previous day’s assault at Trader Joe’s.
Alejandri has a history of similar offenses, including prior arrests for battery, trespassing, assault with a deadly weapon, petty theft, resisting arrest, vandalism, brandishing, possession of methamphetamine, and contempt of court. He is currently on summary probation for battery.
Authorities urge anyone with information about Alejandri or the incidents to contact Detective Jenkins at Benjamin.Jenkins@santamonica.gov or the Santa Monica Police Watch Commander at (310) 458-8427.

Venice Beach Fire Training Drill: LAFD Engages in Comprehensive Exercise
Los Angeles, CA — On Thursday, September 5, 2024, firefighters from Los Angeles Fire Station 37 conducted an extensive training exercise at a historic four-story building located at 417 Ocean Front Walk in Venice, originally constructed in 1921.
The drill covered multiple critical aspects of firefighting, including tactical ventilation, fire protection strategies, laddering techniques, building construction analysis, inspection of sprinkler systems, and roof examinations. The session aimed to enhance the firefighters' preparedness for real-life emergency scenarios.
A significant element of the exercise was the strategic deployment of a fire truck and engine along the Venice boardwalk. The fire engine extended its ladder to the rooftop, simulating conditions where rapid access to upper floors or roofs might be necessary during an emergency.
Tactical ventilation, a key focus of the drill, is vital for enhancing safety and efficiency during firefighting efforts. The training underscored the necessity for firefighters to maintain a diverse set of skills for various emergencies beyond fires, including natural disasters and vehicle accidents.
The "laddering" technique, practiced during the exercise, involves positioning ladders against a structure to enable swift entry and exit—a fundamental component of firefighting operations.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) remains committed to its mission of safeguarding life, protecting property, and ensuring community safety through preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery. Guided by core values such as service, character, competency, and collaboration, the department serves over 4 million residents across the nation's second-largest city.
On average, the LAFD responds to approximately 1,368 emergency incidents daily, encompassing medical emergencies, traffic accidents, and fires. The department’s 3,510 uniformed personnel, supported by 392 professional staff, handle a wide range of responsibilities, from firefighting and emergency medical services to technical rescues and hazardous materials management.
With 1,018 firefighters on duty at all times across its 106 fire stations, strategically located throughout Los Angeles, the LAFD maintains a constant state of readiness to protect the city's residents and visitors, underscoring its dedication to community safety.
